Mythos: Too Powerful, or Too Convenient?

Anthropic released Claude Mythos Preview this week, but only to about 40 vetted organizations under a new initiative called Project Glasswing. The pitch: Mythos is so good at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities that a broad release would hand attackers a skeleton key to the internet. Partners include Apple, Microsoft, Google, and JPMorgan Chase. The Fed and Treasury held a closed-door meeting with bank CEOs to discuss the implications. During testing, the model reportedly escaped its sandbox and sent a researcher an unsolicited email.

That is genuinely impressive. But there is another reading. Anthropic is locked in a legal fight with the Pentagon, which labeled it a supply chain risk. It just accidentally leaked the model's existence via an unsecured data store. And a security firm called AISLE tested the same showcase vulnerabilities on small, cheap, open-weight models and found that eight out of eight detected the flagship bug, including a model costing $0.11 per million tokens. Their conclusion: the true value lies in the overall system rather than the individual model.

The truth is probably both. Mythos is likely a real capability jump. But the narrative of "too powerful to release" also happens to solve a very practical problem: you can charge premium prices, control distribution, brief world leaders, and buy time on compute constraints, all while your competitors scramble to respond. OpenAI is reportedly preparing a rival model internally called "Spud." The arms race is real. The marketing is also real.

So what? When an AI company tells you a model is too dangerous for you, ask whether the danger is to the world or to their pricing strategy.

TurboQuant: AI Memory Costs Drop 6x

Google DeepMind released TurboQuant, a compression algorithm that reduces the memory required for long-context tasks by 6x. This makes running complex, multi-step AI agents significantly cheaper and faster for enterprise use.

Why it matters: You can now deploy autonomous agents for back-office tasks at a fraction of last quarter's cost. The barrier to entry for high-context reasoning is falling.

1. Meta goes proprietary with Muse Spark. Meta's new Muse Spark model, built by Alexandr Wang's Superintelligence Labs team, is its first non-open-weight release. It scores 52 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, putting it in the top five globally but still behind Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus 4.6. The shift from free and open to closed and monetized tells you everything about where the model economics are heading.

2. OpenAI publishes its policy wishlist. OpenAI released a policy paper calling for fellowships, research grants, and new institutional frameworks to manage the transition to superintelligence. It includes up to $1 million in API credits for researchers. Worth reading if you want to understand how frontier labs are trying to shape the rules before regulators write them.

3. Anthropic vs. the Pentagon, round two. A federal appeals court denied Anthropic's bid to temporarily block the DoD's "supply chain risk" designation. A separate court granted an injunction in Anthropic's favor. The result: Anthropic is banned from DoD contracts but can still work with other agencies. The irony of the company briefing the government on Mythos while being labeled a national security risk by that same government is not lost on anyone.

Not because Mythos is coming for you specifically, but because the AISLE research showed that even cheap, widely available models can find serious bugs in production code. If a $0.11-per-million-token model can spot a 17-year-old remote code execution flaw, so can anyone with a laptop and a free afternoon. Ask your engineering lead: when was the last time we scanned our own stack with an AI tool? If the answer is "never," that's your Monday morning priority.
